Penetrating Solvents (WD40)
All rollers, hinges, roller tracks and latches will benefit from a generous squirting with anything akin to WD40 or GT85. It’s a solvent, which means it will break down dust, debris and, crucially, oil that gunks up the moving parts and stops the door from functioning properly.
Wipe a little oil on the torsion springs if they are getting rusty or are binding. Pulleys on extension-spring openers and bearings on torsion-spring openers will also appreciate a light greasing.
Tighten the Hardware
A garage door is used up to a thousand times a year on average and that’s a lot of motion to cause the hardware to loosen. Go around all the major fixings with the correct size driver or wrench and ensure the obvious fixing points are still secure.
Clear the tracks
Keep your garage door firmly on the right track by clearing any large pieces of debris or dust from its path. You’ll notice better reliability with any auto-lock features and auto-reversing features if you do this regularly, as large obstructions will alert the object sensors and will stop the door from descending in the interest of safety.
Test the Safety Features
Two mechanisms ensure your safety around modern garage doors: mechanical and photocell systems. The mechanical feature will reverse the door upwards if you press up on the bottom of the door as it comes down. For the photoelectric system, simply locate the laser sensors on either side of the garage door frame. When the door is descending, place your hand between both sensors. The door should stop immediately and may begin to rise back to the top.
